Bulldogs host Wolves Wednesday in final home game of 2013-14 season

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs play their final home game of the 2013-14 season Wednesday night, hosting Newberry College at 8 p.m. Wingate enters the contest 13-11 overall and 10-10 in the SAC. The Bulldogs will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Wednesday night. The Wolves are 17-7 overall and 13-7 in the conference.

Wingate is in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings with two games remaining. The Bulldogs have secured a spot in next week's SAC Tournament, but will play a road game in the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon, traveling to Brevard for a 4 p.m. tip.

The four-game losing streak came after an 85-75 home victory against second-place Anderson on Saturday, Feb. 8. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 19 points and four assists to lead the Wingate attack, while senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 15 points and 13 boards. Sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) also had 15 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Freshman forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards for the Bulldogs, adding two blocks and two assists.

Wingate's losing streak included a span of three road games in five days. The Bulldogs wrapped up the road trip last Wednesday night at Coker, falling 75-59 to the Cobras. The trip started Saturday, Feb. 15, when the 'Dogs dropped a 67-60 decision at Carson-Newman. Wingate led by five with five minutes to go, but the Eagles ended the contest on a 13-1 run. The Bulldogs dropped a 59-58 heartbreaker at Queens on Monday night. Wingate led by 15 in the second half, but went over 10 minutes without a field goal and Queens scored four points in the final 15 seconds to claim the one-point win. The 'Dogs returned home on Saturday, falling 79-65 to No. 14 LMU. Turman had 21 points and 11 boards to lead the Wingate attack, while Daye added 15 points.

The Bulldogs and Wolves met earlier this month, with Newberry winning 81-77 at home. It was Newberry's first victory over Wingate since February of 2010. The 'Dogs had won seven straight against the Wolves. Demarkus Smith and Dondray Walker had 14 points each to lead the Newberry attack. Daye had 22 points to lead the Wingate attack, while Cureton added 14 points and 10 boards. The Wolves led by 17 points with eight minutes remaining in the contest, but the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to two points in the final minute of regulation.

Daye leads the Bulldogs and ranks eighth in the SAC with 17.5 points per game. He has scored 19 or more points 11 times this season, while topping the 30-point mark on four occasions. Daye ranks eighth in the SAC in free throw percentage (83.5 percent). Turman is averaging 13.2 points and a league-best 10.0 rebounds per game. He ranks 13th nationally with 12 double-doubles while ranking 14th in rebounds per contest.

Freshman Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) is third on the team with 9.8 points per game, shooting 38 percent from three-point range. Cureton averages 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, ranking fifth with 1.5 steals per contest. Senior center Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) is second in the SAC with 2.1 blocks per game, adding 7.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. Griffin is fourth in the league with 3.9 assists per game, ranking fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio while adding 7.8 points per game.

Newberry enters the contest tied for fourth in the SAC standings at 13-7 in league play. Walker leads the Wolves and ranks 10th in the SAC with 16.8 points per game. Smith is right behind him, ranking 11th with 16.2 points per contest. Newberry leads the SAC and ranks second nationally, scoring 93.7 points per game.
