Bulldogs fall 15-10 in SAC opener at Coker

Hartsville, S.C.----The Coker College Cobras scored seven consecutive goals to start the second half, rallying from an 8-7 halftime deficit to defeat Wingate University 15-10 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon. The Cobras improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.

Freshman attack Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) had four goals and two assists to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman midfield Kevin Norman (Ocala, Fla.) added three goals for the Bulldogs, while freshman midfield Steen Swedstedt (Mercer Island, Wash.) had a goal and three assists.

Coker junior midfield John Bretton (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) had five goals and an assist to lead the Coker attack. Sophomore attack Mike Martiello (Westbury, N.Y.) added four goals and two assists, while sophomore attack Shane Wilson (Westbury, N.Y.) had four goals for the Cobras.
 
Wingate scored three of the last four goals of the second quarter to take an 8-7 edge at intermission. The Bulldogs converted three extra-man goals in the second stanza, including two by Murphy. His second EMO goal tied the score 6-6 with 8:36 left. After an unassisted goal by Bretton, WU freshman midfield Kevin Norman (Ocala, Fla.) and freshman attack Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) scored back-to-back goals to give the visitors the halftime advantage.
 
Martiello scored the first two goals of the third (12:48, 10:10) to give the Cobras the lead for keeps. Bretton's fourth goal made the score 10-8 Coker one minute later. Wilson scored the final two goals of the third quarter (5:54, 5:33), giving the hosts a 12-8 advantage. The Bulldogs would get no closer down the stretch.
 
Coker outshot Wingate 36-29 with a 29-22 edge in shots on goal. The Cobras held a 36-29 advantage in ground balls. Wingate made 17 turnovers to seven miscues for Coker. Bulldog senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won 19-of-28 face-offs.
 
Two Wingate goalies split time. Bulldog freshman Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) played the first half, recording eight saves and allowing seven goals. Classmate Michael Connor (Stockport, England) started the second half, also playing 30 minutes. Connor posted six saves, while allowing eight goals. Coker junior goalie Tim Ryan (Glocester, R.I.) logged 60 minutes with 12 saves and 10 goals allowed.
