Bulldogs take 6-3 victory over NGU Crusaders, fall 7-0 to GWU Runnin' Bulldogs Saturday in Boiling Springs

Boiling Springs, N.C.----The Wingate University men's tennis team won two of the three doubles matches and the top four singles contests to take a 6-3 NCAA Division II victory over North Greenville University Saturday afternoon at Gardner-Webb University. Earlier in the day, the host GWU Runnin' Bulldogs earned a 7-0 victory over the pre-season South Atlantic Conference favorite WU Bulldogs. Wingate is 1-2 overall entering Sunday's match at Johnson C. Smith University.

In the NGU match, Wingate freshmen Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) and Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) won two matches each to lead the Bulldogs. In the number two doubles match, Kudrick teamed with senior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) to defeat NGU sophomore Sergio Araujo-Filho (Canoas City, Brazil) and junior Andres Santiago Robles-Camacho (Villavicencio, Colombia) 8-6.

In singles, Kudrick played a marathon three-setter against North Greenville freshman Sjors van Eck (Ospel, the Netherlands). Kudrick won the first set 6-2 before van Eck rallied for a 7-6 victory in the second stanza. In the 10-point tiebreaker (played in lieu of the third set), Kudrick survived 11-9 to take the victory.

Pezzoli did not spend as much time on the court against the NGU Crusaders, earning a 6-0, 6-0 number three singles flight victory over North Greenville junior Juan Vargas (Bogota, Colombia). Earlier in the day, Pezzoli and classmate Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) defeated van Eck and freshman Marcelo Mikio-Yshikawa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) 8-3 in the number three doubles match.

Bulldog junior Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) and sophomore Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) also won singles matches in the North Greenville contest, dropping a collective total of nine games. In the Gardner-Webb match, Kudrick and Forbes won the number two doubles contest. GWU took the doubles point with victories at the number one and the number three flights.
