Wingate blanks Lees-McRae 27-0 in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University first-year attack men Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) and Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) posted eight points each as the Bulldogs blanked Lees-McRae College 27-0 in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field. Murphy had five goals and three assists, while Kotch had four goals and four assists (NCAA box score).
 
Wingate improves to 3-1 overall, while Lees-McRae falls to 0-4 overall. The Bulldogs return to South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday, hosting Catawba College for a 3:30 p.m. contest. The Lees-McRae Bobcats visit Emmanuel (Ga.) College Thursday at 6 p.m.

Kotch recorded all eight of his points in the first half. He had a team-best two goals in the first quarter as Wingate built an 8-0 advantage. Kotch also dished out two assists in the first frame. He repeated the performance in the second quarter (two goals, two assists), as the Bulldogs added nine goals for a 17-0 lead.
 
Wingate sophomore attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals and three assists in the first half, while Murphy recorded three goals and two assists in the opening 30 minutes. Six different players scored in the second quarter, with Murphy scoring the final goal of the frame (on a Vogrig assist) with 30 seconds to go.
 
Thirteen different Wingate players scored goals Saturday. Freshman attack Josh Wilson (Bel Air, Md.) matched Kotch with four goals. Vogrig had three scores, while Bulldog junior attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) and freshman midfield Steen Swedstedt (Mercer Island, Wash.) had two goals each.
 
Wingate senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won 14-of-16 face-offs with one goal, one assist and 13 ground balls. Freshman midfield Jake Pennigar (Durham, N.C.) won 11-of-15 face-offs with six ground balls. The Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats 55-12 with a 47-14 advantage in ground balls.
 
Bulldog freshman goalie Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) played the first half, recording two saves while facing four shots. Freshman goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England) faced only one shot (no saves) in his 15-minute, third-quarter stint. Bulldog junior goalie Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) finished for the Bulldogs. He faced seven shots with four saves in the fourth quarter. Lees-McRae freshman goalie Mike Gregory (Greensboro, N.C.) went the distance. He had 18 saves.
