Wingate, N.C.----Queens University of Charlotte withstood a furious Wingate University comeback, surviving for a 13-12 South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse victory Saturday night at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field on the Wingate campus. The contest was the first night game on the Belk Track Complex turf field (NCAA box).
 
Queens led 12-5 in the third quarter before Wingate mounted its rally. The visiting Royals improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate is 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday night, traveling to number 14 Lenoir-Rhyne for a 6 p.m. contest. Queens travels to Catawba Monday for a 4 p.m. SAC contest.
 
For Queens, sophomore attack Garrett Chan (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) had five goals. Royals junior attack Evan Farkas (Havre de Grace, Md.) had three goals, while junior attack Casey Hock (Danville, Calif.) had two goals and three assists. Queens sophomore goalie Eric Dolan (Hopkinton, Mass.) had 21 saves.
 
For Wingate, junior attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) had three goals and one assist. Bulldog junior midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C. had a game-high four assists. Junior midfield Zak Goings (Haymarket, Va.) also had three goals, while freshman midfield Steen Swedstedt (Mercer Island, Wash.) had two goals and one assist. Wingate freshman goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England) had 15 saves.
 
Queens went up 12-5 on an unassisted goal by Hock with 11:15 remaining in the third quarter. Neither team would score for 11 minutes until Wingate tallied two goals in the final 14 seconds of the third frame. Schumacher posted an unassisted goal with 14 seconds to go. Bulldog senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won the face-off and scored Wingate's seventh goal at the third-quarter buzzer.
 
Swedstedt cut the WU deficit to 12-8 with an extra-man goal. He was assisted by Watts with 12:16 left. Fourteen seconds later, Chan scored the final Queens goal on a dish from Hock. Goings sandwiched two goals around a Swedstedt score to bring Wingate within two (13-11) with 5:39 remaining. Watts had assists on two of the three goals in the Goings-Swedstedt-Goings sandwich.
 
Schumacher closed out the scoring on a highlight-reel assist from freshman attack Josh Wilson (Bel Air, Md.) with 1:42 left in regulation. Queens won the ensuing face-off. Hock and Farkas took shots to give the Royals insurance, but Connor saved both. Queens retained possession, but turned the ball over with three seconds left. The Bulldogs got the ball down field, but could not get a shot as time expired.
 
Wingate outshot Queens 43-35. The Royals held a 42-28 advantage on ground balls. Both Sneed and Queens junior midfield Kenneth Stryker (Millersville, Md.) won 13 face-offs each. The Bulldogs converted three-of-six EMO chances, while the visiting Royals managed only one-of-six on similar opportunities.
