Mount Olive, N.C.----The University of Mount Olive Trojans won two out of three doubles matches Saturday afternoon, adding three singles victories to take a 5-4 win over 34th-ranked Wingate University in NCAA Division II men's tennis action. Mount Olive improves to 15-1 on the season. The Bulldogs see their eight-match winning streak come to an end, falling to 15-7 overall.
Mount Olive took a 2-1 lead through doubles play, winning 8-5 at number one and two doubles. Wingate's lone doubles victory came from freshman
Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) and
Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.), who prevailed 8-4 at number three doubles.
The Trojans picked up wins at number one and two singles, while Pezzoli rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 win at number three singles. Freshman
Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) won his 21st straight match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number four singles, while senior
Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) added a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win at number five singles.
Next up for Wingate is the Food Lion SAC Tournament. The regular season SAC champion Bulldogs will be the number one seed, looking for their second tournament title in three years.
