Mars Hill scores twice in final 62 seconds to take 15-13 SAC victory over Wingate

Mars Hill, N.C.----The Mars Hill University men's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final 62 seconds, taking a 15-13 South Atlantic Conference victory over visiting Wingate University Saturday at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium on the MHU campus. Lion junior midfield Anthony Malcolm (New Westminster, B.C.) scored the game-winner for the hosts.
 
Mars Hill is 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Wingate is 6-6 overall and 1-5 in the SAC. The Bulldogs celebrate Senior Day Saturday, hosting Tusculum for a 3 p.m. SAC contest. The Lions step out of the league fray Wednesday, visiting Lees-McRae for a 4 p.m. start.
 
For Mars Hill, junior midfield Ryan Sage (Kelowna, B.C.) had six goals, while Malcolm and junior attack Jimmy McBride (New Westminster, B.C.) had three goals each. For Wingate, junior midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a career-high five goals. Bulldog sophomore attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals, while freshman attack Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) contributed two scores and a team-best five assists.
 
Malcolm scored his game-winner with 1:02 to play, giving the hosts a 14-13 advantage. Mars Hill won the ensuing face-off, allowing junior attack Brian Pieklik (Kennesaw, Ga.) to score an insurance goal 30 seconds later. Pieklik had two goals Saturday.
 
The Bulldogs trailed 13-8 entering the fourth quarter. Wingate responded with five unanswered goals, tying the contest 13-13 on a Watts score with 5:47 to play. Vogrig had three of the five goals during the Bulldogs' rally. Murphy had four assists in the flurry, including the helper on the Watts tally.
 
Watts scored back-to-back goals to start the game (8:25, 7:07) to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 edge. Murphy dished out the assist on the second score. The Lions answered with an 8-1 run spanning two quarters, taking an 8-3 lead on a Malcolm man-up goal with 6:56 to go in the second stanza. McBride assisted on the play. Sage had three goals in the 8-1 push, while Malcolm contributed two markers.
 
Wingate outshot Mars Hill 46-33, including a 14-5 edge in the fourth quarter. Both teams took advantage of man-up opportunities; Wingate converted four in five tries, while Mars Hill had two EMO goals in four attempts. Bulldog senior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won 22-of-31 face-offs. He also posted a game-high 13 ground balls.
 
Mars Hill senior goalie Patrick McMahon (Buffalo, N.Y.) picked up the victory. In 56-plus minutes, he allowed 12 goals and recorded 15 saves. MHU junior goalie Jack Grinewich (Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave up one goal in three minutes-plus. Wingate freshman goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England) went the distance. In 60 minutes, Connor surrendered 15 goals while posting 14 saves.
