Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hill leads Wingate to 71-60 SAC victory at Brevard Saturday

Brevard, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt senior point guard Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va.) established season-highs in points and rebounds and hit a huge second half three-point field goal, boosting the Bulldogs to a 71-60 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory at Brevard College Saturday in Boshamer Gymnasium. Wingate (13-6 overall, 11-1 SAC) wins its ninth straight game overall and its 11th consecutive league contest. Brevard is 3-12 overall and 2-10 in the SAC.

Hill had 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and no turnovers in a team-best 38 minutes of action Saturday. Wingate graduate student forward Andrea Bertrand (Midlothian, Va.) led the visiting Bulldogs with 19 points. Sophomore guard Shelby Tricoli (Waynesville, N.C.) netted 13 points, while graduate student forward Chantal Dunbar (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 11 points and eight boards.

For Brevard, junior guard Katie Williams (Robbinsville, N.C.) had 16 points. Sophomore guard Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore forward Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) tallied 12 points each for the home-standing Tornadoes. Lenox hit a game-high four three-point field goals in eight tries.

A Lenox triple cut Wingate's lead to 54-53 with 6:36 remaining in the second half. On the ensuing possession, Hill hit only her fifth three-point field goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a little breathing room. Wingate junior forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) added an inside hoop and Dunbar converted a traditional three-point play to complete an 8-0 run for the visitors.

The Dunbar basket and free throw put Wingate up 62-53 with 4:48 to play. Brevard was not done, as Lenox hit another triple (4:29) and Williams nailed a short jumper (3:54) to cut the deficit to 62-58. The Tornados would score only two more points in the final three-plus minutes as the Bulldogs finished the league battle on a 9-2 flurry.

Hill was in the middle of things, as she fed Tricoli for a basket to give Wingate a six-point lead on the next possession (3:34). Bertrand and Hill sandwiched field goals around a Williams hoop to make the score 68-60 with 1:48 left in the contest. McGee hit two free throws and Hill added one charity toss in the waning moments to settle the final score.

The Bulldogs scored the first 13 points of the contest, almost reaching the 17 consecutive points they scored in their 69-46 SAC championship-clinching victory at Brevard last season (March 1, 2014). Brevard tied the score 21-21 on a jumper by Crisp with 9:52 to go in the opening frame. The contest was tied two additional times (23-23, 27-27) before the Tornados took their only lead of the afternoon 32-31 on a Lenox three-point field goal with 2:40 to play.

Wingate scored the final seven points of the first half with Tricoli hitting a huge three-point field goal (1:14) to conclude the scoring and make the tally 38-32 Bulldogs at intermission. Wingate shot 54.2 percent in the first half (13-of-24), while Brevard managed only 36.4 percent accuracy (12-of-33).
