Belmont, N.C.----Five different Bulldogs scored in double figures Saturday night as Wingate University cruised to a 95-68 victory over Belmont Abbey College in NCAA Division II men's basketball action. Wingate picks up its second win of at least 20 points, moving to 2-0 on the year. The Crusaders fall to 1-1 on the year.
Junior forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) had 22 points and six rebounds to lead the Wingate attack. Junior
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) had 21 points, hitting eight-of-13 shots from the field and three-of-four shots from beyond the arc. Freshman
Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) notched his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore
Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) contributed 10 points.
"I thought Belmont Abbey was very ready to play and came out and gave us a great punch," head coach
Brian Good says. "We staggered for a little bit but really regained our composure and played some very good basketball on both ends in the second half. Our bench play was solid. We had some foul trouble and the guys that came in didn't let us miss a beat. Our rebounding in the second half was really good."
Nick Hough had 19 points to lead the Belmont Abbey attack, going seven-of-11 from the field.
Markel Pollard added 16 points, while
Deion Lane had 14 points for the Crusaders.
Buckets from Lane and Hough, followed by a triple from Lane gave Belmont Abbey a 21-15 lead five minutes into the opening half. Buckets from Doyle and Baez cut the lead to one at the 8:36 mark. A three from Doyle, followed by a Cureton bucket put Wingate on top at the 6:51 mark. A Doyle jumper, followed by a
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) layup put the 'Dogs on top by six.
Wingate took a 39-31 lead at the 3:36 mark on another Doyle bucket. A Pollard jumper cut the lead to four, but two free throws from Xavier Griffin pushed the lead back to eight with 1:32 left in the half. A Hough triple help the Crusaders get within three, but a Griffin layup with 34 second left gave Wingate a 45-40 halftime lead.
The 'Dogs would outscore BAC 50-28 in the second half. The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to take a 15-point lead five minutes in. Four different players scored in the run, capped by a Baez layup to make it 59-44. A Hough bucket cut the lead to 13 at the 11:12 mark, but a McCall bucket and two Cureton free throws put Wingate on top 75-56 with eight minutes remaining.
A Baez three with five minutes left put the Bulldogs on top by 20, while another Baez triple made it 86-65. Two Baez free throws, along with a
Bryan Rouse (Greensboro, N.C.) bucket made it 94-68 with 51 second left.
Wingate shot 56.3 percent from the field, hitting six-of-15 shots from three-point range (40 percent). Belmont Abbey shot 46.2 percent, going nine-for-22 from beyond the arc (40.9 percent). The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Crusaders 41-21, piling up 19 second-chance points compared to Belmont Abbey's seven. Wingate also dominated in the paint, outscoring the Crusaders 58-18.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting sixth-ranked Mount Olive at 7 p.m.
