Doyle’s career night leads Bulldogs to 90-76 win at Brevard

Brevard, N.C.----Wingate University junior guard Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) poured in a career-high 28 points Saturday afternoon, leading the visiting Bulldogs to a 90-76 victory at Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Wingate improves to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Doyle was 10-of-12 from the field, knocking down seven-of-nine shots from three-point range. Sophomore guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 15 points off the Wingate bench, going five-for-seven from the field. Freshman Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) contributed 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, while senior guard Xavier Grifffin (Marshville, N.C.) had 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Demarcus Threatt had 18 points to lead the Brevard attack. Miles Leathers added 11 points, while Omar El Diraoui contributed 10 points and four rebounds.

Brevard scored the first five points of the game, but Wingate responded with an emphatic 16-0 run. Baez had a layup and two triples in the flurry, which gave the 'Dogs a 16-5 lead at the 14:19 mark. A D.J. Bostick three trimmed the lead to seven, but a four-point play from Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) made it 22-11 with 11:21 to go in the half.

Wingate used a 7-0 run to take a 29-13 advantage. Lolar had a three and a layup in the flurry, while a Doyle triple capped the spurt. Two more Doyle triples put the Bulldogs on top by 21 at the 7:22 mark. Brevard scored the next 10 points, cutting the lead to 11 on a Leathers free throw with four minutes to go. Three Lolar free throws, along with a Robinson bucket pushed the lead back to 16, but A Leathers triple helped the Tornados cut Wingate's halftime advantage to 12 at 45-33.

A triple and three-point play from Doyle in the opening minutes of the second half gave the Bulldogs a 51-35 lead. Another Doyle jumper pushed the lead to 18 at the 16:31 mark, but buckets from Alex Moe and Leathers trimmed the lead to 13 with 13 minutes remaining. A jumper and a three from Doyle made it 64-47 with 11:24 to go.

Doyle knocked down another triple to push the advantage to 18, while a Lolar layup made it 69-48 at the 9:34 mark. A bucket from Moe got the Tornados back within 15, but a Baez jumper and Griffin three-point play helped the 'Dogs push the lead to 84-63 with 3:40 remaining. Brevard would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Wingate shot 52.5 percent from the field, hitting 13-of-22 shots from three-point range (59.1 percent). The 13 triples are a season high for the Bulldogs this year. Brevard shot 45.6 percent from the field, going eight-for-20 from beyond the arc (40 percent). The Bulldogs held a 39-28 rebounding advantage, collecting 22 second-chance points. Wingate got 33 points from the bench on Saturday, while knocking down 15-of-18 shots at the free throw line (83.3 percent).

The Bulldogs will have 11 days off, returning to action on New Year's Eve, hosting Augusta University at 2 p.m.
