Wingate wraps up three-game home stand Wednesday night against Coker

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs are back in Cuddy Arena Wednesday night, hosting the Coker College Cobras at 8 p.m. The contest ends a three-game home stand for the Bulldogs, who have won four of their last five games. Wingate is 14-10 overall and 11-7 in the SAC. The Cobras are 10-12 overall and 9-9 in the conference.

The Bulldogs are in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings. Wingate, Queens and Carson-Newman are all 11-7 in the conference. Fifth-ranked Lincoln Memorial is in first place 17-1 in the league standings with four games remaining. The Bulldogs travel to LMU Saturday, then go to Newberry next Wednesday. The Wolves are right behind the second-place logjam at 10-8 in SAC play. Wingate wraps up the regular season the following Saturday, hosting Brevard.

Wingate saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 71-67 to Carson-Newman despite a career-high 22 points from SAC Player of the Week Xavier Griffin. The junior point guard went seven-of-10 from the field and eight-for-nine at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Anthanee Doyle added 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Lee McCall pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs moved into second place in the league standings last Wednesday with a thrilling 75-74 home victory over Queens, completing the season sweep against the Royals. Griffin had 17 points on four-of-seven shooting while going eight-for-eight at the free throw line. Zeriq Lolar added 11 points, while Doyle chipped in with 10 points. Keith Griffin had the game-winner in the final 10 seconds. The sophomore center also had the game-winner in the final seconds of Wingate's 59-57 win at Anderson the previous Saturday.

Wingate and Coker met less than a month ago, with Cobras notching a 67-62 victory in Hartsville on Jan. 28. Kiara Shoats had 12 points to lead the Coker attack, while Donte Samuels and Alex Cohen added 11 points apiece. Ryan Daye had a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs, knocking down four-of-six shots from three-point range. Herbert Harrison added 11 points on five-of-eight shooting for Wingate.

Daye leads the Bulldogs and ranks 14th in the SAC with 13.5 points per game, knocking down a team-best 43 triples while shooting 80 percent at the free throw line. Xavier Griffin is averaging 10.7 points per game, ranking 10th in the conference with 2.8 assists per game. He shoots 47 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range.

Isiah Cureton averages 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. The reigning SAC Freshman of the Year ranks sixth in the SAC in blocks, seventh in steals and ninth in rebounding. Lolar is averaging 7.4 points per game during his freshman season, ranking second on the team with 30 threes. Keith Griffin contributes 7.1 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebounds per contest, good for 11th in the league.

Coker enters the game having lost three of its last five since the victory over Wingate. The Cobras are coming off a 79-65 win over Brevard Saturday, getting 30 points from Errick Bethel, the league's leading scorer. Bethel averages 19.9 points per game, over two points more than anyone else in the conference. He was held to a season-low five points in the first meeting against Wingate. Samuels averages 13.2 points and 5.5 boards per game for the Cobras, shooting 50 percent from the field.
