Wingate, N.C.----The 30th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs dropped only four sets Monday afternoon en route to a convincing 9-0 victory over the visiting Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in NCAA Division II tennis men's tennis action. Wingate improves to 2-2 overall, while JC Smith falls to 0-6 on the year.
Wingate's number three doubles team of freshmen
Nicholas Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Jerome Desrosiers (Drummondville, Quebec) picked up an 8-0 win for the Bulldogs. Sophomores
Josh Eardley (Newcastle, England) and
Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) prevailed 8-1 at number one doubles, while redshirt freshman
Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) and junior
Westin Bennett (Calgary, Alberta) won by the same score at number two doubles.
Zari won 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles, while Eardley and Schofer picked up 6-0, 6-1 wins at number two and three singles, respectively. Bennett, Desrosiers and Oliveira picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories at four, five and six singles.
Wingate is back in action Thursday, hosting No. 29 Francis Marion at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs were slated to travel to Coker Tuesday, but that match has been postponed due to weather.
