Buies Creek, N.C.----The Wingate University men's and women's tennis teams opened the 2015 spring season at NCAA Division I Campbell Friday afternoon. The Campbell men prevailed 6-1, while the Campbell women defeated Wingate 5-2. Both Wingate teams fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Campbell men won all three doubles matches. Wingate's doubles team of freshman
Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) and sophomore
Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) dropped a tough 6-5 decision at number three doubles.
In singles action, Pezzoli picked up a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 victory at number five singles. Sophomore
Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) rebounded after dropping the opening set 6-4, winning the second set 6-3 before falling 7-5 in the third set. Freshman
Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) also forced a third set after winning the second set 6-1, but fell in a third set tie-breaker.
The Campbell women also won all three doubles matches. Wingate's number one doubles team of freshmen
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) and
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) dropped a tough 8-7 match, while junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) lost a hard-fought 8-6 match at number two doubles.
Womeodu won 6-4, 6-2 at number five singles, while Garcia prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 at number six singles.
Both Wingate teams are back in action Saturday, facing more NCAA Division I opposition. The men travel to Davidson for a 10 a.m. start, while the Wingate women face UNC Charlotte at 2:30 p.m.
