Augusta, Ga.----The GRU Augusta women edged 47th-ranked Wingate University 5-4 Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division II women's tennis action, while the 21st-ranked GRU Augusta men won 9-0 against the visiting Bulldogs. The Wingate women fall to 2-4 overall, while the men fall to 2-3 on the season.
The Wingate women dropped two of three doubles matches Saturday. The number three doubles team of junior
Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore
Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up a 9-7 win at number three doubles.
Holland won 7-5, 6-3 at number two singles, while freshman
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at number three singles. Senior
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) won 6-2, 6-2 at number five singles. Freshman
Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) won the first set 6-4 at number six singles, but dropped the final two sets 4-6 and 4-6.
The GRU Augusta men picked up 8-2, 8-2 and 8-4 wins in doubles action.
Junior
Sebastian Hall (Lorrach, Germany) rebounded after a first set loss at number three singles, winning 6-1 before losing a third-set tiebreaker. Sophomore
Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) also won his second set 6-1 after losing the first set, but lost the third set tiebreaker 10-8. Freshman
Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) won the first set 6-3, but lost the second set 3-6, then dropped the tiebreaker.
Both Wingate teams are back in action Sunday, traveling to Georgia College for a 12 p.m. match.
