Late push lifts Catawba to 17-10 SAC victory over visiting Wingate Wednesday

Salisbury, N.C.----Catawba College ended the game on a 7-2 run, claiming a 17-10  South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse triumph over visiting Wingate University at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field Wednesday. The Indians are 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Wingate Bulldogs are 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the SAC.
 
Catawba junior attack Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.J.) led all scorers with six points, thanks to four goals and two assists. Indian freshman attack Caroline Beggs (St. Johns, Fla.) had four goals, while freshman attack Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C.) posted three goals and one assist.
 
For Wingate, junior team captain Erin Murphy (Mooresville, N.C.) had four goals to lead the visitors. Sophomore midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) had one goal and two assists, while freshman attack Jaclyn Chiesa (Canton, Ga.) had two goals.
 
The two teams were tied 6-6 at intermission, as Corace led the hosts with three goals. Murphy and Chiesa had two goals each for the Bulldogs. Beggs scored twice and junior attack Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md.) added one score to give the Indians a 9-6 advantage with 27:46 left in the second half.
 
Murphy sandwiched two goals around a Catawba score to cut the Wingate deficit to 10-8 three minutes. The Bulldogs would get no closer, as the Indians responded with a 6-0 flurry to put the game out of reach. Six different players tallied one goal each, climaxed by a Meredith Jones goal with 4:10 left to make the score 16-8 Catawba. Corace had both of her assists during the 6-0 run.
 
Bounds stopped the bleeding with an unassisted goal 13 seconds later. Catawba senior midfield Kaleigh Reidy (Raleigh, N.C.) and Wingate sophomore attack Allie Holland (Ocala, Fla.) traded goals in the final 28 seconds to settle the final margin at 17-10.
 
Catawba outshot Wingate by a 29-27 margin, including a 17-10 edge in the pivotal second half. Both teams had 27 ground balls each. Catawba scored on two-of-seven free position attempts, while Wingate found the back of the nets on one-of-seven free position shots.
 
Indian junior goalie Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md.) earned her fifth victory of the season, allowing 10 goals and recording 12 saves. Bulldog freshman goalie Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) took the loss, surrendering 17 goals and posting 10 saves. Both Davis and Hinkle played 60 minutes each Wednesday.
 
Both teams play SAC games Saturday. Wingate hosts Coker at 4 p.m., while Catawba visits Tusculum for a 12 noon contest.
