Wingate leads wire-to-wire in 18-9 home triumph over Chowan Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women's lacrosse team built a 13-1 lead and never looked back, taking an 18-9 NCAA Division II women's lacrosse victory over Chowan University at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field Wednesday. Wingate is 8-6 overall, while the CU Hawks fall to 3-7 overall.
 
Wingate sophomore midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) led the Bulldogs with five points, thanks to three goals and two assists. Bulldog junior midfield Emily Nosek (Bel Air, Md.) had four goals, while freshman attack Jaclyn Chiesa (Canton, Ga.) added three goals and one assist.
 
For Chowan, sophomore midfield Charisse Wilcox (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a game-high five goals. The Bulldog defense held Hawk junior attack Mackenzie Reid (Fort Saskatchewan, Canada) to one goal. Reid entered the game as the leading goal scorer in the NCAA Division II with her 50 goals.
 
Wingate freshman attack Madison LaBarbera (Colchester, Conn.) took a pass from Bounds and found the back of the nets, giving Wingate a 13-1 advantage with 8:17 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs led 16-3 at intermission, as seven different WU players scored a first-half goal. Nosek led the way with four goals, while Chiesa added three scores. Four Bulldogs had two first-half goals each.
 
Chowan outscored Wingate 6-2 in the second stanza, as Wilcox tallied three goals after the halftime break. The Hawks doubled their shot total in the second half, as the visitors took 10 shots after taking only five in the opening frame.
 
Wingate outshot Chowan 32-15, including a 27-5 advantage in the first half. The Bulldogs won 27 of the 29 draw controls, while the hosts collected 56 ground balls. The Hawks picked up 21 ground balls. Wingate scored on four-of-seven free-position shots, while Chowan found the back of the nets on two-of-three free-positions shots.
 
Bulldog freshman goalie Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) earned the victory, playing 60 minutes between the pipes. Hinkle allowed nine goals and posted six saves. Chowan sophomore goalie Rachael Cramer (Woodstock, Ga.) also went the distance. Cramer recorded 10 saves and surrendered 18 goals.
 
The Chowan contest concludes a four-game home stand for Wingate. The Bulldogs hit the road Saturday, visiting Queens University of Charlotte for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Chowan is off until Tuesday, when the Hawks travel to Brevard for a 3:30 p.m. encounter.
