Americus, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs saw a nine-run lead slip away in game one Saturday afternoon, but rebounded for a 7-4 victory in game two of an NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern University. The Bulldogs move to 23-17, while the Hurricanes go to 12-27 on the season.
Game One: Georgia Southwestern 10, Wingate 9 (10 innings)The Bulldogs led 9-0 in the fifth, but the Hurricanes used an eight-run sixth inning to help tie the game in the ninth, while winning it in the 10th.
Paul Sorrow went two-for-four with three RBI to lead the GSW attack, while
Davey King drove in a pair of runs.
Devyn Newberry was three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored, while
Evan Alderman had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Senior first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and sophomore infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) each went two-for-five with two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was one-for-one with an RBI and three runs scored, while senior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-five with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) led off the game with a triple, then scored on a
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) RBI groundout. Clark led off the second with a walk, then moved to second on a Barnette single. Cherry followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.
The Bulldogs took a four-run lead in the fourth when Clark scored on a double steal.
Wingate plated five runs in the fifth to push the lead to nine. Spitz got it started with an RBI double, while Clark drew a bases-loaded walk. Barnette's two-run single made it 8-0, while an error put the 'Dogs on top 9-0.
Georgia Southwestern scored its first two runs of the sixth on Wingate errors, while Newberry's two-run single made it 9-4. Alderman followed with an RBI single, while a bases-loaded walk and Sorrow two-run single made it a one-run game.
The Hurricanes tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single from Sorrow.
Alderman led off the 10th with a single, then moved to second on a groundout. He would score the game-winning run on a Wingate throwing error.
Kyle Spinks got the win to move to 1-2. He tossed two shutout innings with two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed two runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Sophomore left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) piled up five strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief for the Bulldogs.
Game Two: Wingate 7, Georgia Southwestern 4Billings was two-for-three with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Clark added two hits and an RBI, while Spitz went one-for-two with an RBI and two runs scored.
Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Spitz drew a two-out walk, then scored on an RBI double from Clark.
The Bulldogs plated four runs in the second to push the lead to five. Cherry started the inning with a single, then went to third on a double from
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.). A walk would then load the bases for Billings, who connected on his sixth homer of the year, a grand slam to make it 5-0.
The Hurricanes scored four times in the third to cut the lead to one. An RBI single from
Brett Burgess got the scoring started, while the second run scored on a wild pitch. Sorrow added an RBI single, while a
Josh Tatnall RBI single made it 5-4.
Wingate responded with two runs in the fourth to push the advantage to three. Billings started the rally with a one-out double, then scored on an RBI single from Spitz. A wild pitch would allow Spitz to score, making it 7-4.
That would be plenty for junior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.). Brown entered the game with two outs in the third and got out of the jam by inducing a groundout. He struck out the first two hitters in the fourth, then struck out the side in the fifth. Brown added two more strikeouts in the sixth, while also working a 1-2-3 seventh with one more strikeout.
Brown got the win, moving to 6-4. He tossed 4 1/3 innings of perfect relief, piling up eight strikeouts without a walk.
Dylan Brown took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in one inning, striking out one and walking three to fall to 1-2.
The two teams are back in action Sunday, playing a single game at 12 p.m.
