Newberry, S.C.----Wingate University freshman
Caileigh Apicella (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) scored five minutes into the second overtime Saturday afternoon, giving the 16th-ranked Bulldogs a 2-1 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate, who picked up a 1-0 overtime victory against Queens Wednesday, moves to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 1-5-2 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The first 45 minutes were scoreless, with Wingate holding an 8-4 edge in shots, which included a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 70th minute, with freshman forward
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) heading home a pass from sophomore
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) to make it 1-0. It was the second goal of the year for Moore.
Newberry tied it with eight minutes left in regulation, with
Michelle Calmeyn heading home a
Lindsay Huber corner kick, tying the match 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime, Wingate got the game-winner with exactly five minutes remaining. Apicella netted the first goal of her career to give the Bulldogs another dramatic victory.
Wingate dominated the action on the afternoon, out-shooting the Wolves 24-9. The 'Dogs held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected five saves for the Bulldogs, while
Alexis Carrillo piled up 13 saves for the Wolves.
Leyble had a match-high seven goals on the day, including four shots on goal. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Fletcher (Jacksonville, N.C.) registered six shots, including four shots on goal.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for a 1 p.m. match.
