Wingate puts three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs play their fourth game in eight days on Wednesday, traveling to Salisbury to take on the Catawba College Indians at 8 p.m. in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Wingate enters the contest riding a three-game winning streak, moving to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. The Indians are 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Wingate Sports Network will provide an audio broadcast of Wednesday's game, while Catawba will provide video and live stats.

The Bulldogs have bounced back from a two-game losing streak to reel off three consecutive victories, starting with a 69-63 win over Coker last Wednesday. Wingate held the Cobras to 13 first-half points and led by as many as 28 in the second half.  Junior Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 21 points and seven rebounds, going seven-of-10 from the field. Classmate Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 20 points, 10 boards, four assists, four steals and four blocks, going seven-of-10 from the field and four-of-five from three-point range. Junior Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.

Wingate held Carson-Newman to its lowest point total in nearly five years Saturday, rolling to a 71-48 victory in Cuddy Arena. Junior Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) had 17 points, while Cureton added 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Dominguez led five Bulldogs in double figures in Monday night's 94-86 win over Tusculum, going four-of-five from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Senior Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, hitting two-of-four shots from beyond the arc while going six-for-six at the free throw line. Cureton contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Wingate leads the SAC in blocked shots, ranking second in the league and 11th nationally in defensive rebounds. The Bulldogs are also second in the conference in field goal percentage defense and free throw attempted, ranking third in rebounding margin and total defense.

Four Bulldogs average at least 11 points per game on the season, led by Cureton's 15.2 points per game on 48.8 percent shooting from the field, 39.5 from three-point range and 83.7 at the free throw line. He also ranks fourth in the SAC in blocks and sixth in steals. Doyle averages 11.3 points per contest, knocking down a team-best 28 triples while shooting 37.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Griffin is scoring 11.1 points per game in his senior season, shooting 79.7 percent at the free throw line while handing out 3.6 assists per contest, good for fifth in the SAC. Freshman Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) contributes 11.0 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game on the year, notching five double-doubles. Dominguez is shooting 61.1 percent from the field this season, collecting 8.5 points per game.

The Bulldogs won both meetings against Catawba last season, while winning 10 of their last 11 against the Indians overall. The 'Dogs prevailed 80-74 in Salisbury last season, getting 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks from Cureton, while Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) added 12 points and 11 boards. Wingate won by 11 points in Cuddy Arena, with Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) piling up 16 points, 10 boards and three blocks for the Bulldogs.

Catawba is coming off a 74-71 win at Brevard Saturday, getting 18 points from Troy Warren. The Indians had lost two of three entering Saturday's game, falling by 15 points at Queens and by 13 at Belmont Abbey. Jameel Taylor leads Catawba with 15.3 points per game, shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from beyond the arc. Jerrin Morrison averages 13.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Rakeem Brown adds 10.1 points per contest.

Wingate is back on the road Saturday, traveling to Anderson at 4 p.m. That will be followed by another three-game home stand which sees the Bulldogs host Queens, Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne.
