Dahlonega, Ga.----The 15th-ranked North Georgia Nighthawks got a goal in the 76th minute Wednesday afternoon, defeating visiting Wingate University 2-1 in NCAA Division II women's soccer action. North Georgia improves to 8-1-2 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-4-1 on the year, seeing their four-game winning streak come to an end.
After 43 scoreless minutes, the Nighthawks got on the board in the final 90 seconds of the opening half when
Renee VanHorn scored off a
Rachel VanHorn assist to take a 1-0 halftime lead.
Wingate wasted no time getting the equalizer coming out of intermission, striking just over a minute into the second half to tie it. Sophomore
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) took a cross from freshman
Taylor Krakower (Wayne, N.J.) and found the back of the net for the seventh time this season, making it 1-1.
North Georgia regained the lead with just under 14 minutes remaining in regulation, when
Sophia Matonak scored on a free kick from just outside the box to make it 2-1.
The Nighthawks ended the day with a 14-6 advantage in shots, holding a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. North Georgia also took five of the seven corner kicks on the afternoon. Six different Bulldogs registered a shot on Wednesday.
Kaitlyn Siberski had a pair of saves for the Nighthawks. Junior
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected two saves for the Bulldogs.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting No. 25 Carson-Newman at 5 p.m.
