Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs knocked off 25th-ranked Carson-Newman University 1-0 Saturday evening, getting the game-winner late in the first overtime in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at Pride Park. Wingate improves to 8-4-1 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Bulldogs are now 3-0-1 in overtime this season.

The first half went scoreless, despite the teams combining to take 14 shots, including 11 shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected seven first-half saves for the Bulldogs, while Jacqueline Burns had four saves for Carson-Newman.

The second half saw a total of just nine shots, with the Eagles holding a 6-3 advantage including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The first six minutes of overtime saw the Eagles take three shots, with Jones collecting two more saves.

Wingate finally found the back of the net in the 97th minute. All-American Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) got it started at the top of the box, sending one to sophomore Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in the box. She got the ball past the keeper on the right side of the box, where freshman Morgan Gray (Broomfield, Colo.) had an empty net to score her first goal as a Bulldog, giving Wingate the victory.

Carson-Newman ended the night with an 18-9 advantage in shots, including a 14-7 edge in shots on goal. Jones piled up a career-high 14 saves to earn the shutout, while Burns had six saves for Carson-Newman.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba for a 5 p.m. start.
