Wingate blanks Catawba to push SAC winning streak to six

Salisbury, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt sophomore midfielder Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored a pair of goals Wednesday evening, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Bulldogs notch their sixth straight SAC win, improving to 9-4-1 overall and 7-2 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 6-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference. Wingate has now won nine straight against the Indians.

After 43 scoreless minutes, the Bulldogs got on the board late in the first half when All-American midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored her first goal of the season to put Wingate on top 1-0 heading to intermission.

The Bulldogs grabbed a two-goal lead 21 minutes into the second half, when Zickert took a feed from senior defender Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.) and found the back of the net for the first time this year.

Zickert struck again in the 84th minute, notching her first career multi-goal gave to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 advantage.

Each team ended the night with 12 shots, but Wingate put 10 shots on goal compared to Catawba's three. Junior forward Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, including two shots on goal. Brunworth and Zickert had two shots on goal apiece.

All-SAC and All-Region goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected three saves to preserve her ninth shutout of the season. Shelby Thompson had seven saves for the Indians.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 5 p.m. start.
