Hickory, N.C.----The Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears got an early second-half goal Saturday evening, prevailing 1-0 against visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 11-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 9-5-1 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
The first half went scoreless, with the Bears holding a 4-3 advantage in shots. Lenoir-Rhyne put three shots on goal, compared to Wingate's one shot on goal.
LRU got on the board two minutes into the second half, when
Kendall Smith netted her eighth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Bears finished the night with a 13-5 edge in shots, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Five different Bulldogs to shots, with
Morgan Gray (Broomfield, Colo.) and
Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) notching shots on goal.
Andrea Leano had two saves for the Bears. Junior
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected seven saves for the Bulldogs.
Wingate is back in action next Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 5 p.m. on Senior Day to wrap up the regular season.
