Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs bounced back from a tough weekend, picking up a 3-0 victory at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Tuesday night. Wingate won by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-15 to improve to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 9-11 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
Sophomore outside hitter
Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) had 13 kills to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .400 while adding five digs. Junior outside hitter
Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) added 11 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, while freshman middle blocker
Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) hit .474 with 10 kills. All-American
Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) piled up nine kills and 19 digs, while freshman setter
Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) compiled 35 assists, seven digs and four kills. Classmate
Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) picked up 18 digs for the Bulldogs.
"We made some much-needed progress tonight with our offense, defense and several other aspects of our game," head coach
Shelton Collier says. "It can be a challenge for a team to bounce back after some setbacks, so we were proud of being able to do this with a road win tonight."
Taylor du Bray had nine kills, 16 digs and seven assists to lead the Coker attack.
Madison Bingle added seven kills and 10 digs, while
Bethany Prochnow contributed five kills.
Christen Bragg had 15 assists, 12 digs and three kills, while
Kara Overholt collected 11 digs.
Three consecutive Attaway kills gave Wingate a 7-3 lead in the opening set. A pair of Bludau kills pushed the lead to five, but a kill from Bingle got the Cobras within two at 12-10. Kills from Saehler and Attaway pushed the lead back to five, but kills from Bingle and du Bray got Coker within one at 18-17. Wingate responded by scoring the final seven points of the set. Bludau started the flurry with a pair of kills, while an Alles ace made it 22-17. Another Bludau kill made it 24-17, while a Saehler kill ended the frame. Wingate hit .386 in the first set, with 19 kills and just two errors.
Three straight Mather kills gave Wingate a 10-7 lead in set two, while kills from Mather and Bludau made it 14-8. Coker scored the next five points, cutting the lead to one on four consecutive Bulldog errors. A pair of kills from Mather, along with a Saehler ace gave the 'Dogs a 21-16 advantage. Kills from Berles and Bingle got Coker within two at 23-21, while a
Missy Reid ace made it 23-22. Sophomore
Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) answered with a kill to make it 24-22, while a Saehler kill ended the frame.
Wingate reeled off an 8-0 run to take a 17-8 lead in set three. Mather, Bludau and Saehler started the flurry with kills, while a block from Saehler and Williams capped the spurt. A kill from du Bray got the Cobras within five at 18-13, but a 4-0 run pushed the lead back to nine. Alles and Attaway each had a kill in the flurry, while Saehler capped it with a block. Kills from Saehler and Mather made it 24-15, while a block from Mather ended the match.
The Bulldogs hit .292 on the night, with 51 kills and 13 errors in 130 attacks. Coker had 28 kills and 14 errors in 119 attacks, hitting .118 on the match. Saehler led Wingate with a pair of blocks, while three different Bulldogs notched an ace.
Wingate is back in action Friday, returning home after a five-match road trip to host Queens at 7 p.m.
