Wingate, N.C.----The sixth-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs scored four goals in the first 31 minutes Wednesday night, rolling to an emphatic 8-1 victory over visiting Coker College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the SAC, while the Cobras fall to 5-4-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Junior forward
Elma N'For (Yaounde, Cameroon) had two goals and an assist to lead the Bulldogs, while senior defender
Alex Nelson (Newcastle, England) also had a pair of goals. Senior midfielder
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) and junior forward
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) each contributed a goal and three assists, while junior midfielder
Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) registered a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs.
Ross got things started five minutes into the match, ripping a low liner into the bottom left corner of the goal off a perfect cross from Juul. Ross has a team-high six goals this year. Juul added to the lead seven minutes later, lining one into the right corner from the middle of the box off a cross from N'For to make it 2-0. It was the third goal of the year for the All-SAC and All-Region midfielder.
Wingate took a three-goal lead in the 18th minute when junior midfielder
Christian Szalay (Vienna, Austria) scored his second goal of the season when a corner kick from Juul was headed towards the middle of the box by Ross. Szalay headed it home from right in front of the net to make it 3-0.
The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead when N'For took a perfect through ball from Ander in the left side of the box, then lined one into the opposite corner to give Wingate a four-goal lead at halftime.
Coker cut the lead to three in the second minute of the second half, when
Jose Herencia chipped one over the keeper from the edge of the box, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to make it 4-1.
Wingate had the answer in the 53rd minute when Ander sent a cross right in front of the net to Nelson, who made a perfect touch to beat the keeper and put the 'Dogs back on top by four. Nelson struck again six minutes later, hitting a sharp grounder from the top of the box off a pass from Juul to make it 6-1. It is the first multi-goal game of Nelson's career.
N'For scored his second goal of the night and sixth of the year in the 71st minute when Ander drew the defense deep into the box, then dropped a perfect pass back to N'For at the edge of the box. The junior ripped one into the right corner to make it 7-1.
Ander capped the scoring on the night, bending a free kick from just outside the box into the right corner, the fourth goal of the season for the reigning SAC Player of the Year.
Wingate ended the night with a 24-6 advantage in shots, holding a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) got the win, playing the first 74 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs. Redshirt freshman
Victor Spaggiari (Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected a pair of saves in the final 16 minutes.
Justin Walker had four saves for the Cobras.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a 7:30 p.m. start.
