Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University All-American midfielder
Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored in the final minute of the first half Friday afternoon, giving the fifth-seeded Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University in the semifinals of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer tournament at Manchester Meadows. Wingate improves to 12-5-1 overall, advancing to the title game for the seventh straight year. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 13-4-2 on the year.
The first 44 minutes of the first half went scoreless, but in the final 35 seconds, Brunworth took a pass from sophomore midfielder
Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) just outside the top of the box. The four-time all-conference selection then ripped one over the keeper, scoring her third goal in the last five games. The 2015 All-American has a goal in four of Wingate's last six SAC Tournament matches.
The last 45 minutes saw Lenoir-Rhyne out-shoot Wingate 11-4, putting a pair of shots on target. Junior goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) made a diving stop on an
Abigael McGarel shot from the top of the box 10 minutes into the second half. The Bears fired off three shots in the final two minutes, but the Wingate defense was there to deflect all three attempts.
Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne are no strangers when it comes to postseason play. This year marked the fifth time they have met in the SAC Tournament since 2010. The first four meetings all came in the SAC title game, with each team claiming the championship twice.
Lenoir-Rhyne finished the day with a 20-10 advantage in shots, holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Freshman
Taylor Krakower (Wayne, N.J.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, including two shots on goal.
Jones piled up six saves to notch her 12th shutout of the season for the Bulldogs. An All-SAC and All-Region selection in 2015, Jones has allowed just one goal in five career SAC Tournament matches.
Andrea Leano had four saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Wingate will play in its seventh consecutive SAC title match Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs will take on the winner of the Carson-Newman vs. Anderson contest. The SAC championship game is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday in Rock Hill. The Bulldogs defeated Carson-Newman 1-0 in the regular season, while dropping a 2-0 decision at Anderson.
