Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wingate celebrates Alumni Day with a 70-58 SAC victory over Brevard

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women's basketball team (14-8 overall, 11-7 SAC) extend its winning streak to four games, thanks to a 70-58 victory over Brevard College (1-21 overall, 0-18 SAC) in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court Saturday. Wingate tallied 48 points in the paint and 34 bench points in the triumph.

"We got out in transition and had some of the best passing and finishing we've had all year," Wingate head women's basketball coach Ann Hancock says. "I am glad everyone got to play. Rebounding and the inside game once again was key."

Freshman guard Courtney Robinson (Taylors, S.C.) led Wingate's offense, sinking eight-of-12 field goals on the way to a game-high 19 points. Right behind her doing work was junior forward/center Kristina Rumplasch (Mount Airy, N.C.), who posted 14 points on the night. The Cape Fear Community College transfer converted five of her nine field goal shots and drained four-of-four foul shots.

Brevard saw three of its student-athletes put up double digits in scoring. Leading the way for the Tornados with 13 points was junior guard Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.). Following her closely were seniors Hadara Bannister (High Point, N.C.) and Shelby Wolfe (Pittsboro, N.C.), who each scored 10 points.

The Wingate Bulldogs out-rebounded their mountain opponents 45-33. Four Bulldogs finished the night with at least six boards or more, with senior forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) and sophomore guard Taziya Moody (Columbia, S.C.) leading the way as they collected eight rebounds each. McGee also added eight points and an assist to her statistical ledger for the contest.

Hancock was pleased with the response for the day's events as the Bulldogs celebrated Alumni Day Saturday afternoon. "Today was a fun day all the way around," Hancock says. "We had a wonderful alumni event with a tremendous turnout. It is nice for the current players to learn about the history (of our program) and the players who have built the winning tradition. We capped the day off with an all-around good effort on the court."

Wingate will hit the road for its next contest as they travel to Hartsville, S.C. to face the Cobras of Coker College (9-15 overall, 8-10 SAC) in SAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Brevard will return home and prepare for a tough match-up against Anderson University, the current SAC leaders. The AU-BC contest will begin at 4:45 p.m. and will be featured on regional television.
