Nationally-ranked Wingate tennis teams stay perfect in SAC play with wins at Mars Hill

Mars Hill, N.C.----The 48th-ranked Wingate University men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 win at Mars Hill University Saturday afternoon, while the No. 35 Wingate women prevailed 7-2 over the Lions in South Atlantic Conference tennis action. The Wingate men move to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Wingate women are 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

The Wingate men won all three doubles matches, starting with an 8-0 win at number one doubles from senior Sebastian Hall (Lorrach, Germany) and junior Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas). Juniors Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) and Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) won 8-3 at number two doubles, while freshman Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) teamed with senior Westin Bennett (Calgary, Alberta) for an 8-0 win at number three doubles.

Hall won 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 at number one singles, while Kudrick won 6-4, 6-1 at two singles. Pezzoli prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles, while sophomore Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) won 7-6, 6-2 at four singles. Freshman Bram Delisse (Oss, Netherlands) notched an 8-1 victory at six singles for the Bulldogs.

The Wingate women also won all three doubles matches Saturday. Sophomore Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) won 8-6 at one doubles, while freshman Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) won by the same score at number two doubles. Senior Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and junior Sierra Parsons (Toronto, Ontario) added an 8-1 victory at three doubles.

Holland rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win at three singles, while Homan won 6-3, 6-1 at number four singles. Junior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at five singles, while Parsons notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at six singles.

Both Wingate teams are back in action Monday, hosting Catawba at 3 p.m.
