Both Wingate teams pick up victories at Bluefield State

Bluefield, W.Va.----The 48th-ranked Wingate University men's tennis team handed Bluefield State its first loss of the season, picking up a 5-4 victory in NCAA Division II tennis action Wednesday afternoon. The 35th-ranked Wingate women cruised to a 9-0 victory over Bluefield State. The Bulldog men move to 9-3 overall, while the women are now 7-4 on the season.

The Wingate men picked up two wins in doubles play, starting with an 8-6 win from senior Sebastian Hall (Lorrach, Germany) and junior Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) at number one doubles. Juniors Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) and Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) notched a 9-7 victory at three doubles to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 win heading to singles play.

Pezzoli cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number three singles, while Schofer prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory at six singles. Hall won the clincher at number one singles. The senior won the first set 7-6, then dropped set two 7-5. He won the clincher 7-6, winning the tiebreaker to give the Bulldogs the victory.

The Wingate women rolled through doubles play on Wednesday. Sophomore Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) cruised to an 8-1 win at one doubles, while freshman Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) teamed with sophomore Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) prevailed 8-3 at two doubles. Freshman Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) and junior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) rolled to an 8-2 victory at three doubles to make it 3-0 heading to singles play.

De Andreis cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at number one singles, while Ternera won 6-1, 6-3 at two singles. Womeodu prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at three singles, while senior Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number four singles. Tanik won 6-0, 6-1 win at five singles, while Homan rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at six singles.

Both Wingate teams are back in action March 15, traveling to Pfeiffer for a 2 p.m. match.
