Queens knocks off #48 Bulldogs in SAC Tournament semifinals

Brevard, N.C.----The third-seeded Queens University Royals knocked off second-seeded and 48th-ranked Wingate University 5-1 in the semifinals of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference men's tennis tournament Saturday afternoon. Queens improves to 13-3 overall, advancing to Sunday's SAC championship match. Wingate falls to 17-5 overall. The Bulldogs await word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Royals took two out of three in doubles play Saturday. Wingate's number three doubles team of juniors Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) and Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) picked up an 8-4 victory, but Queens won 8-1 and 8-4 at one and two doubles to lead 2-1 heading to singles play.

Queens took a 3-1 lead with a win at six singles, then went on top 4-1 thanks to a victory at one singles. A 7-6, 6-3 victory at number two singles clinched the match for the Royals. When the match was clinched, sophomores Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) and Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) were up a set at four and five singles.

Queens will face fifth-seeded Newberry in the SAC title match Sunday. The Wolves knocked off fourth-seeded Anderson in the quarterfinals, then defeated top-seeded Tusculum in Saturday's semifinal match.
