Bulldogs and Flames play to 0-0 draw in season opener

Columbus, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2016 season with a double overtime 0-0 draw against Lee University on day one of the 2016 CSU Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Columbus State. The Bulldogs and Flames both played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Both teams start the year 0-0-1 overall.

Each team registered four shots in the opening half, with each squad notching two shots on goal. Sophomore Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) had the first shot on goal of the match, but her header in the 11th minute was saved by Lee's Haley Gribler. Freshman Morgan Gray (Broomfield, Colo.) had a shot turned away by Gribler 10 minutes later. Wingate junior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) stopped a pair of shots from Anna Leslie in the final four minutes of the opening half.

Wingate outshot the Flames 9-5 in the second half. Junior Kaitlyn Fletcher's (Jacksonville, N.C.) effort was denied by Gribler early in the second half, while another shot on frame by Moore in the 68th minute was also saved. A shot from redshirt sophomore Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was saved by Gribler with four minutes left in regulation. Jones registered three more saves in the second half, including a save against a Suzanne Arant shot in the final 10 minutes of the half.

Each team recorded just one shot apiece in the first overtime. Zickert's shot in the opening minutes was blocked, while a shot from Lee's Nicole Blanchard with three minutes to go was also blocked.

Blanchard had a chance in the first minute of the second overtime, but Jones was there for her sixth save of the night. Wingate had the final chance of the evening, but a shot from sophomore Gabby Caliendo (Orlando, Fla.) in the final minute went wide.

Wingate ended the night with a 15-11 edge in shots, while Lee held a 6-5 lead in shots on goal. Each team took six corner kicks. Moore led the Bulldogs with four shots, including two shots on goal. Zickert and Caliendo added two shots apiece.

Jones, the All-SAC and All-Region goalkeeper from last season, notched the shutout, collecting six saves on the night. She helped the Bulldogs lead the SAC with 12 shutouts last season, while the Wingate defense also led the league in goals-against average. Gribler registered five saves for the Flames.

The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, facing second-ranked Columbus State at 4:30 p.m. The Cougars advanced to the 2015 national championship game.
