Columbus, Ga.----2015 national runner-up Columbus State scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute, defeating Wingate University 2-1 in NCAA Division II women's soccer action on the final day of the 2016 CSU Collegiate Invitational Sunday afternoon. The second-ranked Cougars improve to 2-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-0-1 on the year.
Wingate came out aggressive, getting two shots on goal in the opening five minutes. Sophomore
Gabby Caliendo (Orlando, Fla.) put a shot on frame 20 seconds in, but
Maylyn Parsons had the save. Sophomore
Kimmi Moore's (Hubert, N.C.) shots was stopped by Parsons four minutes later. Wingate junior goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) notched three saves in the next 15 minutes.
The Cougars got on the board 24 minutes in, when first team All-American
Nicole Corcione scored off a
Hugrun Elvarsdottir assist. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into halftime, holding an 11-7 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
Wingate tied the game 18 minutes into the second half. Moore took a feed from senior forward
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) and fired one into the left corner of the net, tying it 1-1.
CSU had the answer less than two minutes later.
Riley Clark scored off a feed from
Tehgan Anguilm, giving the cougars a 2-1 advantage.
Columbus State ended the day with a 23-14 advantage in shots, holding a 13-6 edge in shots on goal. Parsons collected five saves for the Cougars, while Jones piled up a career-high 11 saves for the Bulldogs. Moore had a team-best three shots for Wingate, all of which were on goal.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting Pfeiffer at 6 p.m.
