#24 Bulldogs move to 16-0 on the year with 3-0 win at Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----The 24th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs remained perfect on the season, hitting .362 while rolling to a 3-0 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15 to improve to 16-0 overall and 11-0 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 8-9 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Senior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) once again dominated in incredibly efficient fashion, hitting .652with 15 kills and zero errors in 23. Sophomore middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) hit .353 with seven kills and three blocks in two sets of action, while junior middle blocker Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) contributed six kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) piled up 28 assists, 11 digs, four kills and two blocks, while junior libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) collected 16 digs.

"We had a very impressive and focused performance this evening," head coach Shelton Collier says. "Hitting .362 in an opponents' gym show our offense was operating at a high level. Rachel Alles was very good again for us and Katie Bludau continues to play at a very high level. Our total team game tonight was solid."

Rocky Carter had eight kills to lead the Newberry offense, while Zoe Dinkins and Sidra Triplett added seven kills apiece. Taylor Garrison handed out 27 assists for the Wolves, while Cydney Shaw picked up eight digs.

Kills from Holmquist and Alles gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 lead in the opening set, but a Vanessa Blas kill got the Wolves within two at 11-9. Two kills and a block from Havenaar sparked a 5-0 run to give the 'Dogs a 16-9 advantage. Kills from Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) and Anne Abernathy (Knoxville, Tenn.) extended the lead to 10, while a Holmquist kill made it 24-13. Bludau ended the opening set with a kill. The Bulldogs hit .333 in the first frame with 15 kills and just three errors.

Four early kills from Bludau helped Wingate jump out to a 12-3 lead in the second set. A Dinkins kill trimmed the deficit to eight, but a Holmquist kill and two Havenaar kills made it 18-9. Kills from Bludau and Havenaar gave the 'Dogs a 24-16 lead, while a Bludau kill ended the frame. Wingate had 16 kills and just two errors in the set, hitting .359.

An Attaway kill and two Bludau kills sparked a 4-0 run to give the Bulldogs an 11-6 lead in set three. A 5-0 Wingate run pushed the lead to nine, getting a kill and a block from Bludau in the spurt. Kills from Bludau and Rachael Cecka (Plymouth, Wisc.) made it 19-9, while an Alles kill and Newberry error gave the 'Dogs a 24-14 advantage. Wingate won the match on a Newberry error. The Bulldogs had 15 kills and three errors in the final frame, hitting .400 in the set.

The Bulldogs, who rank fifth nationally in hitting percentage, registered a .362 hitting percentage on the night, with 46 kills and just eight errors in 105 attacks. It marks the highest hitting percentage of any road match for Wingate this season. Newberry hit .101 for the match, with 29 kills and 19 errors in 99 attacks. Havenaar and Holmquist led the Bulldogs with three blocks apiece, while Alles, Holmquist and Rachel Truslow (Matthews, N.C.) each collected an ace in the match.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Coker for a pair of matches. The Bulldogs face UNC Pembroke at 4 p.m., while taking on the Cobras at 7 p.m.
