#21 Bulldogs drop tight 3-1 match at Anderson

Anderson, S.C.----The 21st-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs suffered their first setback of the season Friday night, dropping a tough 3-1 match at Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Anderson won by scores of 25-23, 26-24, 20-25 and 25-23 to improve to 18-3 overall and 12-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 18-1 overall and 12-1 in league play.

"We are disappointed that we could not find a way to win this match tonight," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We knew coming in that Anderson was a good team and would be a challenge on their home court, so it was not surprising they played well enough to win. We obviously need to improve in some specific areas of our game and we have three matches next week where we will have an opportunity to do so."

Marissa Mitter had 19 kills and six digs to lead the Anderson attack. Jayln Knight added 11 kills and eight digs, while Kathryn Hughes had nine kills for the Trojans. Serena Jackson contributed eight kills, four digs and three blocks, while Rachel Burts hit .300 with seven kills and three blocks.

Senior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) had 17 kills to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .368. Sophomore middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) added 15 kills in 21 swings, hitting .667 while junior middle blocker Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) had nine kills on the night. Sophomore setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) piled up 50 assists, 12 digs and five kills, while junior libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) picked up 22 digs.

Anderson hit .182 on the match, with 56 kills and 26 errors in 165 attacks. Wingate had 60 kills and 22 errors in 148 attacks, hitting .257. Adams had both of Wingate's aces on the night, while four different Bulldogs collected one block apiece.

The Bulldogs wrap up a five-match road trip Tuesday, Oct. 24, traveling to Queens for a 7 p.m. match. Wingate returns home next Friday, hosting Tusculum at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
