#24 Bulldogs struggle in 3-1 setback at Queens

Charlotte, N.C.----The 24th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs hit a season-low .151 Tuesday night, falling 3-1 at Queens University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball. Queens won by scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-12 to improve to 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the SAC. Wingate drops its second straight match, falling to 18-2 overall and 12-2 in league play.

Casey Tarvin had 16 kills to lead the Queens attack, adding nine digs and two blocks. Rebecca Cochran added 14 kills and 16 digs, while Jessica Raines contributed 11 kills and four blocks. Sydney Kunz handed out 48 assists, while Mallory Swarts collected 18 digs.

Senior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) had 13 kills to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) and junior middle blocker Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) contributed 11 kills apiece, while sophomore setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) piled up 31 assists, 13 digs and five kills. Junior libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) picked up a match-high 31 digs for the Bulldogs.

"Queens played really well tonight and played at a very high level at times," head coach Shelton Collier says. "They played some great defense and certainly earned the win tonight. Winning on the road in this league is tough and with Queens playing well and us not bringing enough, it was a tough night for us."

Queens hit .233 on the match, with 58 kills and 18 errors in 172 attacks. Wingate had 53 kills and 24 errors in 192 attacks to hit .151. The Royals picked up eight blocks on the night, compared to just one for the Bulldogs.

Wingate is back in action Friday night, hosting Tusculum at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
