Four hit double-digit points as Wingate collects 86-71 triumph over Brevard

Brevard, N.C.----Wingate University junior guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) led all scorers with 23 points, while WU senior forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 86-71 victory over the Brevard College Tornados in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action from Boshamer Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
 
Wingate tallies its 13th victory in the last 14 contests, improving to 16-8 overall and 13-5 in the SAC. Brevard is now 2-22 and 0-18 in league play. The Bulldogs return home to Cuddy Arena Wednesday for a SAC encounter versus Coker. Tip-off is slated for an 8 p.m. start on ESPN3. Brevard travels to Anderson to face the Trojans on the same night and time.
 
Lolar shot 61 percent from the floor (eight-of-13), while also finishing six-of-nine from beyond the arc (66.7 percent). WU senior center and Academic All-America® candidate Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 boards, while shooting six-of-10 from the floor (60 percent). Senior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) also added 13 points for the visitors.
 
The Bulldogs swept nearly every major statistical category, outrebounding the Tornados by a dominant margin of 42-20. Wingate collected 12 offensive rebounds, which led to 15 second-chance buckets. The WU bench outscored the Brevard reserves 26-17.
 
Brevard was led by junior guard Stevie Williams, who scored 22 points and shot three-of-six from three-point range (50 percent). Three other Tornados finished in double figures with junior guard Shelby Parris and senior forward Omar El Diraoui contributing 15 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman forward Levi Lamb added 10 points for the hosts.
 
Wingate never trailed in the contest, leading by as many as 14 points in the first half of play. The Bulldogs sprinted out to the early 12-7 advantage with 15:08 left in the half on a Griffin jump shot and never looked back. A Cureton two-pointer made it a 27-16 Wingate lead with 10:57 to go; however, Brevard would trim the margin down to a five-point game (27-22) at the 8:51 mark.
 
With the Tornados trailing 35-28, Wingate freshman guard Charlie Hovasse (Colorado Springs, Colo.) nailed a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 10-point lead at 38-28 with 3:27 remaining. The 'Dogs would maintain the double-digit advantage for the remainder of the half, going to the halftime locker room with a 44-32 advantage.
 
The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in the second half. A Lolar two-point jumper made it a 60-49 Wingate lead at the 12:04 mark. The visitors never let go of the double-digit mark for the rest of the game with Brevard getting no closer than 11 points. A three-pointer from Lolar gave the 'Dogs their largest lead of the contest at 17 points (71-54) with 7:48 on the clock. A jumper from junior forward Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) with 42 seconds left sealed the 15-point victory for Wingate.
 
Wingate shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) as a team and finished nine-of-20 from beyond the arc (45 percent). The Bulldogs were 21-of-28 from the charity stripe (75 percent). Brevard posted a 43.8 field goal percentage (28-of-64) and hit seven-of-22 from three-point range (31.8 percent).
