Both Bulldog teams drop tight contests against Auburn at Montgomery

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men's and women's tennis teams returned home Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair of tight matches against Auburn at Montgomery in NCAA Division II tennis action. The Wingate women fell 5-4, while the men dropped a 6-3 decision. The 46th-ranked Bulldog women fall to 3-1 on the season, while the men go to 4-2 overall.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles action on the men's side, winning 8-5 at one doubles and 8-6 at three doubles. Wingate's number two doubles team of seniors Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) and Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) dropped a tough 9-8 match at two doubles.

Pezzoli picked up a victory at one singles for the Bulldogs, winning the opening set 7-5, then falling 6-4 in set two before winning the tiebreaker. Freshman Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at two singles, while freshman Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) fought back from a 6-0 loss in set one, winning the second set 6-2 while claiming his match in the tiebreaker. Freshman Theo Dessacs (Toulouse, France) and junior Nicholas Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) both fell in a third-set tiebreaker.

The Wingate women fell behind 2-1 in doubles play, with the number  two doubles team of juniors Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela) picking up an 8-6 victory.

Sophomore Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) prevailed 6-0, 6-3 at number one singles, while freshman Elena Pellegrini (Livorno, Italy) won 6-2, 6-2 at three singles. Senior Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at number six singles for the Bulldogs.

Both Wingate teams are back in action Thursday, traveling to Catawba for a 2 p.m. start.
