Wingate drops a pair of tough games on day two of Flagler Classic

St. Augustine, Fla.----The Wingate University Bulldogs closed out the Flagler Classic with a pair of tough losses Sunday afternoon, starting with a 2-1 eight-inning loss against Flagler. The Bulldogs closed out the weekend with a 2-0 setback against Palm Beach Atlantic. After winning the opening game of the weekend, Wingate dropped a pair of eight-inning contests along with the 2-0 loss. The Bulldogs fall to 5-9 on the season.

Game One: Flagler 2, Wingate 1 (8 innings)

Alli-Ann Bigale and Garland Evans both went one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Flagler attack. Whitney Woodard and Morgan Murphy each added a hit and a run scored for the Saints.

Freshman Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) was two-for-four with a homer to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added two hits including a double for the Bulldogs.

Flagler took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Murphy scored on an RBI single from Evans.

The Bulldogs tied it in dramatic fashion in the seventh, when Coyne connected on her second career homer, a solo shot with two outs to force extra innings.

Wingate was unable to score in the top of the eighth. Flagler wasted little time in the bottom of the frame, with Woodard scoring from second on Bigale's bunt single, giving the Saints the victory.

Ally Marcano got the win, moving to 6-1. She allowed a run on six hits in eight innings of work, striking out 13 and walking five. Freshman Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-4. She allowed an unearned run on a hit in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.

Game Two: Palm Beach Atlantic 2, Wingate 0

Kayla Knight went two-for-two with an RBI and a run scored to lead the PBA offense, while Shelby Wood added an RBI. Alexis Guerra added a double and a run scored for the Sailfish.

Coyne, Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) and Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) each collected hits for the Wingate offense, with Doran registering a double for the Bulldogs.

Palm Beach Atlantic took a 1-0 lead in the first when Knight led off the frame with a single, then scored on Wood's sacrifice fly.

The Sailfish added an insurance run in the fourth when Guerra reached on a one-out double, then scored on Knight's RBI single to make it 2-0.

Jana Wagner got the win, moving to 1-2. She tossed seven shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out two and walking one. Reep took the loss, falling to 4-5. She allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out one and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Augusta for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
