Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against Shippensburg University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the opener 12-4, while rallying for an 8-7 victory in game two to improve to 7-7 on the season. The Raiders fall to 0-5 overall.
Game One: Wingate 12, Shippensburg 4
Junior
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game one, while sophomore catcher
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) went three-for-five with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Junior
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double, RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) went three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs, while freshman
McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) registered two hits and two runs scored.
Goodwin's RBI double in the first gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead, while a Daniels RBI single and Brown RBI groundout in the second, along with a Shippensburg error, made it 4-0.
Shippensburg got on the board in the third, taking advantage of a Wingate error to make it 4-1, but a Shippensburg error in the bottom of the frame allowed another Bulldog run to cross, making it 5-1.
The Raiders scored three times in the fourth to make it a one-run game.
Tommy Baggett connected on a two-run homer to left center, while
Nick Spangler's solo shot to right made it 5-4. Goodwin pushed the lead back to two in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the fifth to take a six-run lead. Andrus plated the first run with a two-out RBI double. Brown followed with the big blow of the game, a towering three-run shot to right center, his fourth homer of the year, making it 10-4.
Wingate scored two more runs in the eighth to push the advantage to eight. Three straight singles started the frame, while Turgeon's two-run single made the final margin 12-4.
Senior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, improving to 3-2 on the year. He allowed three earned runs on six hits in five innings of work, piling up a career-high 10 strikeouts. Right-handers
Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Josh Karklin (Waxhaw, N.C.) combined for four shutout innings in relief, striking out three while allowing just three hits.
Mark Curtis took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed four runs on three hits in one inning, striking out two and walking three.
Game Two: Wingate 8, Shippensburg 7
Sophomore
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) was three-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Goodwin added a homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) was three-for-four with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added a hit and an RBI, while Turgeon collected two more hits in game two.
Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the second when
Drew Bene connected on a two-run homer to left center. Wingate cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame when Barnette scored on Little's RBI single, making it 2-1.
The Raiders took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third on
Jake Kennedy's two-run single. Wingate countered with a four-run third inning, taking a 5-4 advantage. The first run scored on an error, while Llewellyn followed by connecting on a three-run shot to left center, his second of the season to put the Bulldogs on top.
Shippensburg tied it in the fourth when Spangler singled, then scored on a balk, making it 5-5. Kennedy's two-run homer in the fifth gave the Raiders a 7-5 advantage.
Wingate scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Barnette's two-out RBI single plated Andrus to make it 7-6. Goodwin followed by connecting on his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left to put the 'Dogs on top by a run.
Senior right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) shut down the Raiders in the seventh to notch his first win of the year, moving to 1-0. He tossed 1 2/3 shutout innings, striking out four without allowing a hit.
Michael Hope took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed a run on a hit in one-third of an inning, striking out one.
The Bulldogs and Raiders wrap up the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
