Bulldogs roll to 8-1 win over Belmont Abbey in Monday’s home opener

The Wingate University Bulldogs went 3-0 in doubles action and 5-1 in singles action Monday afternoon, rolling to an 8-1 victory over Belmont Abbey College in NCAA Division II men's tennis action. Wingate improves to 1-1 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 5-2 on the season.

Junior Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up an 8-4 win at number one doubles, while sophomore Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) and freshman Theo Dessacs (Toulouse, France) won by the same score at two doubles. Senior Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) and sophomore Bram Delisse (Oss, Netherlands) prevailed 8-5 at three doubles to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Senior Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number one singles, while Belsito won 6-1, 6-4 at number two singles. DuToit rallied back after dropping the opening set 6-2, winning set two 6-3 while claiming the match in a tiebreaker at four singles. Junior Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) prevailed 6-2, 6-1 at five singles, while junior Nicholas Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory at six singles.

The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday, traveling to Mount Olive for a 2 p.m. start.
