Bulldogs rally for thrilling overtime win in SAC Tournament quarterfinals

Wingate, N.C.----The third-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs overcame a 13-point deficit Wednesday night, rallying for a 91-85 victory over sixth-seeded Catawba College in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball tournament. Wingate improves to 20-9 overall, advancing to the SAC Tournament semifinals to face second-seeded Queens. Catawba ends its season at 18-11 overall.

"March is for seniors and we had seniors on the floor who refused to let us lose tonight," head coach Brian Good says. "They gave everything they had on both ends and didn't quit until the buzzer sounded. I thought our second half and overtime were 25 minutes of the best basketball we've played. I'm really looking forward to the weekend.

Senior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 22 points and six assists to lead the Wingate attack, going 11-for-11 at the free throw line. Senior forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Senior guard Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) had 17 points, four boards and three assists, hitting four-of-six shots from three-point range while senior Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six blocks, scoring eight points in overtime on four-of-four shooting. Sophomore guard Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) had 10 points and 10 boards for the Bulldogs.

Jameel Taylor had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Catawba attack. Jerrin Morrison added 21 points and nine rebounds, while Malik Constantine contributed 14 points on five-of-seven shooting. Troy Warren had 12 points and 16 boards for the Indians.

Cureton buried a three to give Wingate an early 16-13 lead, while a Griffin bucket put the 'Dogs on top by four. Catawba answered with a 23-6 run, taking a 13-point lead late in the first half. A Taylor three put the Indians on top, while a Constantine triple and two Morrison threes gave Catawba a 41-28 lead with 30 seconds to go. Cureton's putback in the final second cut the halftime deficit to 11.

A Dominguez three helped trim the deficit to seven early in the second half, but an Arrington jumper put the Indians back on top by double figures. A Baez bucket and Dominguez three got the 'Dogs within six at the 14:15 mark, while two Dominguez free throws and a Cureton bucket made it 55-52 at the midway point of the second half. A Warren bucket and Gilbert McGregor jumper put the Indians on top by 10 with 6:28 left.

Cureton answered with two free throws, while Doyle knocked down big back-to-back threes to make it a two-point game with 3:43 to go. Taylor made it a four-point game with a bucket, but a Dominguez three and three Doyle free throws tied it at 68 at the 2:22 mark. A Morrison dunk and Taylor three-point play put the Indians on top by five with 1:18 to go. Griffin answered with a layup, then missed the free throw, but Cureton got the rebound and Doyle knocked down a three to tie it with 40 second remaining. Neither team scored in the final 40 seconds, forcing overtime.

Two Griffin layups and a pair of Cureton free throws gave Wingate a four-point lead three minutes into overtime. Taylor got the Indians within two with a layup at the 1:26 mark, but another Griffin layup and four free throws from Cureton and Dominguez gave the Bulldogs an 87-79 lead with 22 seconds to go. Catawba got no closer than four the rest of the way.

Wingate shot 40 percent from the field, hitting 10-of-23 shots from three-point range (43.5 percent). Catawba shot 40 percent from the field, knocking down eight-of-22 shots from beyond the arc (36.4 percent). The Bulldogs held a 48-46 rebounding advantage, with a 15-10 edge in second-chance points. Wingate hit 25-of-31 shots at the free throw line, going 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Catawba went 13-for-13 on the night.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, facing 10th-ranked Queens at 8 p.m. on ESPN3 in Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. The Bulldogs swept the season series against the Royals and also defeated Queens in the SAC Tournament semifinals last season.
