Bulldogs use 10-run third in doubleheader split against Mars Hill

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 10 runs in the third inning of game two Saturday afternoon en route to an 11-3 six-inning victory in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader against Mars Hill University. The Lions prevailed 9-0 in five innings in game one. Wingate moves to 18-14 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, while the Lions are now 8-20 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Game One: Mars Hill 9, Wingate 0 (5 innings)

Krista Romine had a homer and four RBI to lead the Mars Hill attack in game one. Casey Stanek and Emily Crouse each drove in a pair of runs, while Cassidy Dahle went two-for-two with an RBI and a run scored for the Lions.

Wingate had just three hits in game one, with freshmen Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) and Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) each going one-for-one. Classmate Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) was one-for-two in game one.

Romine got Mars Hill on the board in the second with a two-run homer to center. Crouse drew a bases-loaded walk in the third, while Romine's two-run single made it 5-0.

The Lions scored three more runs in the fourth, starting with Stanek's two-run double. Crouse added an RBI single to make it 8-0. Dahle drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to give the Lions a nine-run lead.

Sydney Elkin got the win, moving to 4-6. She tossed five shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks. Sophomore right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 8-7. She allowed five runs on five hits in three innings, striking out three and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 11, Mars Hill 3 (6 innings)

Sophomore catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) went three-for-three with two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Floyd and senior Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) each contributed two RBI and a run scored, while VonCannon and sophomore Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) collected an RBI and two runs scored apiece. Senior Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Coyne and freshman Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) each contributed an RBI and a run scored.

Mars Hill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Kaleigh Jonas connected on a solo homer to right center.

Wingate had the emphatic response, scoring 10 times in the bottom of the frame. Two singles and an error loaded the bases, while Coyne drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it. McLaurin's two-run single put the 'Dogs on top, while Wells followed with a two-run single off the fence in left center to make it 5-1. Floyd's two-run double to right center pushed the lead to six, while Sapp's RBI double made it 8-1. VonCannon followed with an RBI double, while Doran's RBI single put the 'Dogs on top 10-1.

Mars Hill cut the lead to seven in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Dahle and a sacrifice fly from Stanek, making it 10-3.

Wingate ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Doran singled to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice, then scored on Swenson's RBI double, making it 11-3.

Weidner got the win, moving to 9-7. She allowed three runs on five hits in six innings, striking out five and walking two. Brittany Duncan took the loss, falling to 0-3. She allowed seven runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking three.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting a doubleheader against Queens at 1 p.m.
