Donahue tosses two-hitter; ‘Dogs use nine-run fourth inning in 11-1 win over Anderson

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed a complete game two-hitter Friday night, while the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-1 victory over Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 9-8 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The victory also gave Wingate head coach Jeff Gregory his 200th career victory.

Junior first baseman Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore shortstop Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) added a double, two RBI and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had an RBI and two runs scored, while freshman Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) along with sophomores Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) and Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) each contributed an RBI and a run scored.

Anderson got on the board in the top of the first when William Thomas led off the game with a single, then scored on a pair of two-out errors by the Bulldogs.

Wingate had the answer, scoring nine times in the fourth. Andrus started the inning with a single, while a fielder's choice and walk loaded the bases. Three consecutive RBI singles from Llewellyn, Turgeon and Little made it 3-1, while a walk and wild pitch put Wingate on top by four. Mason added an RBI single, while Andrus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-1. Brown capped the scoring with a two-run single, giving the 'Dogs a 9-1 advantage.

Daniels plated the 10th run of the night with an RBI double in the fifth. Brown capped the scoring in the eighth inning, lining a solo shot to right, his fifth of the year to make it 11-1.

Donahue was dominant for the Bulldogs. After allowing the unearned run in the first, he allowed a lead-off single in the second. He would retire the next 15 hitters until a lead-off walk in the seventh. The lead-off single in the second was the final hit of the night for the Trojans.

Donahue moves to 4-2 on the year, tossing his first complete game of the season. He allowed two singles while striking out eight and walking two, needing just 103 pitches on the night. Ryan Owens took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed nine runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking three.

The two teams are back in action Saturday, playing a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
