Saints down Bulldogs 11-10 in extra-inning thriller

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs erased an 8-2 deficit, forcing extra innings against visiting Limestone College, but the Saints got a 10th-inning homer from Chase Allen in the 11-10 victory in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Limestone improves to 21-20 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 17-24 overall.

Allen had two homers and three RBI on the night to lead the Limestone attack, while Brandon Etheridge and Ryan Creps also homered for the Saints. Garrett Lowery, Trace Whetsell and James Shepherd each added an RBI for Limestone.

Junior designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was three-for-four with a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) went four-for-six with a double, homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore outfielder Matt Grecco (Norfolk, Va.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) drove in a run for the Bulldogs, while junior outfielder Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) collected three hits and two runs scored.

Etheridge gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead in the first with a solo homer to right. Wingate scored twice in the bottom of the frame, getting a Goodwin RBI single and Limestone error to take a 2-1 advantage.

Limestone scored five times in the second to take a 6-2 lead. Lowery started it with an RBI double, while back-to-back Wingate errors made it 4-2. RBI singles from Allen and Whetsell put the Saints on top by four.

Creps led off the fifth inning with a solo shot, while an RBI double from Etheridge gave Limestone an 8-2 advantage.

Brown led off the bottom of the fifth with his ninth homer of the year, a towering shot to right to make it 8-3. An RBI double from Daniel, followed by a Grecco RBI single got the Bulldogs within three.

Allen led off the sixth inning with a solo homer to put the Saints back on top by four. Brown made it a two-run game in the bottom of the frame when he lined a two-run single to right center, making it 9-7.

Daniel led off the bottom of the seventh with his first career homer, a solo shot down the left field line to make it a one-run game. Grecco would then score the tying run when Brown reached on an error, making it 9-9.

The Saints took a 10-9 lead in the top of the ninth on Shepherd's RBI single. Wingate answered in the bottom of the inning, with Grecco and Andrus starting the frame with singles. Brown drove in his fourth run of the night with two outs, dropping an RBI single down the left field line to make it 10-10, sending the game to extra innings.

Allen put the Saints back on top in the 10th, connecting on his second homer of the night and 17th of the year with two outs, making it 11-10.

Jalen Byrd got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed a run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out three. Eric Mullinax notched his second save of the year, working a scoreless 10th inning. Senior right-hander Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series at Carson-Newman at 3 p.m.
