Both Wingate tennis teams roll to 9-0 Senior Day wins over Brevard

Wingate, N.C.----The 42nd-ranked Wingate University men's tennis team and 33rd-ranked women's team both rolled to 9-0 victories over visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference tennis action Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The Bulldog men improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the SAC, while the Wingate women push their SAC winning streak to 56, improving to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in league play.

The men swept through doubles play Sunday, starting with an 8-2 win at one doubles from seniors Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) and Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel). Senior Filippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) teamed with freshman Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) for an 8-1 win at two doubles, while junior Theo Dessacs (Toulouse, France) and sophomore Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) prevailed 8-0 at three doubles.

Pezzoli rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at one singles, while Dessacs won 6-1, 6-4 at two singles. Zari prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at three singles, while junior Nicholas Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won by the same score at four singles. Schofer won 6-1, 6-2 at five singles, while junior Jerome Desrosiers (Drummondville, Quebec) picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at six singles.  

The Bulldog women also swept through doubles play, starting with an 8-2 win at one doubles from juniors Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) and Maria Garcia (San Carlos, Venezuela). Senior Andrea Ternera (Bogota, Colombia) teamed with sophomore Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.) for an 8-1 victory at two doubles, while seniors Layla Tanik (Raleigh, N.C.) and Sierra Parsons (Toronto, Canada) won 8-0 at three doubles to give Wingate a 3-0 advantage heading to singles play.

The Bulldogs did not drop a game in singles action. Ternera, Womeodu, Tanik and Homan all picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins at one through four singles. Garcia won 8-0 at five singles, while Parsons prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at six singles.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 2 p.m. start.
