Queens edges #42 Wingate 5-3 in SAC title match

The top-seeded Queens University Royals went 2-1 in doubles play Saturday morning, then picked up three victories in singles play to prevail 5-3 over second-seeded and 42nd-ranked Wingate University in the 2017 South Atlantic Conference men's tennis championship match. Queens improves to 16-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 17-5 overall.

Wingate's number one doubles team of junior Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) prevailed 8-5 at number one doubles, but the Royals won at two and three doubles to take a 2-1 lead to singles play.

Wingate junior Theo Dessacs (Toulouse, France) won 6-2, 6-2 at three singles to tie the match, but Queens won at four singles to go on top 3-2. Belsito's 6-4, 6-2 victory at number two singles tied it 3-3, but the Royals regained the advantage with a victory at one singles. A three-set win at six singles clinched the match for Queens. Wingate senior Amir Zari (Jerusalem, Israel) was leading in the third set at five singles when the Royals clinched the match.

Wingate will learn its postseason fate Tuesday night when the NCAA Tournament field is announced on NCAA.com.
