Bulldogs sweep Trojans to move to 8-0 on the year

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept visiting Anderson University Friday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22 to improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Junior middle blocker Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) hit .423 with 13 kills to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) added 11 kills, six digs, three blocks and two aces, while sophomore middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) contributed 10 kills and four blocks, hitting .409. Sophomore setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) piled up 39 assists, 13 digs and two kills, while junior libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) collected 22 digs to go along with four assists and two aces.

"This match in terms of atmosphere and level of play felt much more like a SAC championship match or an NCAA regional championship match than a typical conference match," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We had some of the best volleyball going back and forth that we have had in our gym in quite a while, and we really had to play well to find a way to win. Both teams were really well-prepared, so it was a fun competitive match."

A kill and a block from Havenaar helped Wingate race out to a 6-0 lead in set one, but a Marissa Mitter kill tied the frame at 11. An Alles kill put the 'Dogs on top 16-14, but the Trojans got another Mitter kill to tie it at 17. A Bludau kill, followed by a block and a kill from Havenaar put the Bulldogs on top 21-19, but Mitter again had the answer, making it 21-21 with a kill. Bludau responded with a kill, while back-to-back Anderson errors made it 24-21. Freshman Anne Abernathy (Knoxville, Tenn.) ended the set with a kill.

Four early Holmquist kills helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 10-6 lead in the second set, but kills from Mitter and Serena Jackson got Anderson within one at 11-10. Wingate scored the next four points, getting two Bludau kills along with a block and a kill from Havenaar to go on top 15-10. Kills from Havenaar and Abernathy, along with a Bludau ace made it 18-11. A Holmquist kill gave the Bulldogs a 23-16 advantage, while another Holmquist kill made it 24-18. Havenaar ended the frame with a kill.

A pair of Mitter kills gave Anderson an 11-9 lead in the third set, but the Bulldogs countered with a 4-0 run, getting kills from Holmquist and Havenaar to go on top 13-11. An Abernathy kill and Bludau ace made it 16-13, while a Holmquist kill made it 20-16. Back-to-back Bludau blocks gave Wingate a 22-16 lead, while a Holmquist kill made it 23-19. Back-to-back blocks from Jackson got Anderson within one at 23-22, but a Bludau kill gave the 'Dogs a 24-22 lead. Havenaar ended the match with her 10th kill of the night.

Wingate hit .191 in the match, with 45 kills and 19 errors in 136 attacks. Anderson had 36 kills and 20 errors in 127 attacks, hitting .126. Havenaar led all players with four blocks, while Bludau and Adams had two aces apiece for the Bulldogs, who had five on the night.
