Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs capped a 4-0 weekend Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Winston-Salem State University on the final day of the Queens Invitational in NCAA Division II volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-16 to improve to 4-0 overall, while the Rams fall to 1-3 on the season.
Junior middle blocker
Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) had nine kills on 13 swings in two sets of action, hitting .692 to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outside hitter
Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) capped an impressive weekend with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while junior
Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) and sophomore
Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) contributed six kills each. Sophomore setter
Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) had 23 assists, five digs and three kills, while senior
Rachel Lods (Lancaster, Calif.) compiled 13 assists and four digs. Sophomore
Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) led all players with 17 digs.
"We played three different lineups in this match and we plan to use all of these combinations once our conference matches begin," head coach
Shelton Collier says after career victory number 998. "Even with different combinations of players, we showed the ability to be efficient, which is very encouraging. It is great to start our season 4-0 and we are looking forward to our home opener on Tuesday."
Back-to-back kills from
Hannah Givens (Greensburg, Ky.) gave Wingate a 10-2 lead in set one, but a
Jasmine Smith kill got WSSU within two at 13-11. A kill and an ace from Alles put the 'Dogs back on top by four, while a Holmquist kill made it 22-16. Back-to-back Holmquist kills put Wingate on top 24-17, while a kill from Alles ended the frame.
Two kills and a block from
Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) gave the Bulldogs a 9-4 lead in set two. Two Holmquist kills and a Givens ace made it 14-6, while a kill from
Hanna Knaley (Florence, Ky.) gave Wingate a 17-7 advantage. Another Knaley kill made it 20-8, while two more Givens kills made it 24-13.
Dunja Sobot (Backa Palanka Serbia) capped the set with a kill.
Two Havenaar kills, along with a Williams kill gave the Bulldogs a 10-2 lead in set three. Kills from Williams and Bludau stretched the advantage to 10 at 18-8, but a
Christa Brown kill got the Rams within four at 19-15. Kills from Williams and Havenaar made it 24-16, while a kill from Williams ended the match.
Wingate hit .356 on the day, with 49 kills and 12 errors in 104 attacks. Winston-Salem had 23 kills and 13 errors in 96 attacks, hitting .104. Five different Bulldogs collected an ace on the afternoon, while Mather led the 'Dogs with two blocks.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, opening conference play at home against Coker at 7 p.m.
