Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs remained perfect in league play Saturday afternoon, prevailing 2-0 at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. The Bulldogs win their fifth straight to move to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Wingate has won 15 consecutive regular season SAC matches. Newberry falls to 2-3-1 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Wingate got on the board in the 23rd minute when freshman
Mattia Ditommaso (Milan, Italy) scored his third goal of the year off an assist from sophomore
Elliot Cutts (London, England).
The Bulldogs led 1-0 at halftime, out-shooting the Wolves 7-4 with a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Wingate added to its lead six minutes into the second half when senior
Christian Szalay (Vienna, Austria) scored his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Jack Wlodyka (Charlotte, N.C.).
The Bulldogs ended the day with a 16-14 advantage in shots, with Wingate holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) picked up his 24th career shutout, collecting six saves on the afternoon. Jacob Williams had five saves for the Wolves.
Wingate wraps up its three-game road trip Wednesday night, traveling to Limestone for a 7 p.m. start in a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Southeast Regional semifinals.
