Gaffney, S.C.----The 14th-ranked Limestone College Saints got a goal in the 87th minute Wednesday night, prevailing 1-0 against visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Limestone improves to 6-1-1 overall, while the 'Dogs see their five-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 6-3 on the year.
All three Wingate setbacks this season have been one-goal games, with every game-winning goal coming in the final seven minutes. Rollins prevailed 2-1 with a goal in the 88th minute, while a goal in the 84th minute was the difference in a 1-0 loss at Chowan.
The first half was scoreless, with Limestone holding a 6-5 advantage in shots and Wingate holding a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Limestone got on the board with just under four minutes left in regulation when
Dimitri Ney found the back of the net off an assist from
Jamie Smith.
Wingate registered three shots on goal in the final 12 minutes, with two coming from sophomore
Elliot Cutts (London, England) and the other coming from
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) in the 89th minute, but they were all turned away by Limestone goalkeeper
Thomas Osborne.
The Bulldogs ended the night with a 12-9 advantage in shots, holding a 6-2 edge in shots on goal 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Osborne had six saves for the Saints, while junior
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) notched one save for the Bulldogs.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, taking on its second top-15 team of the week when No. 15 Lincoln Memorial comes to Pride Park for a 4 p.m. start on ESPN3.
